Book Review: Freedom’s Forge: How American Business Produced Victory in World War II

By Arthur Herman

freedoms-forgeSummary: A fantastic account of the military build up prior and during World War II. If you are history buff, this is a most read. The book offers a fantastic telling of the history of the war buildup as it happened and not give a New Deal revisionist account.

Review

Did you ever see those WWII newsreel-turned-into-tv-shows, like “Victory at Sea”? One of them is entitled- “America the Arsenal of Democracy” and man, what they showed there- making tanks as fast as the assembly-line could move, warehouse full of bombers as far as the eye could see, and making Liberty ships in under a week. Honestly, it was amazing.

Freedoms forge tells the amazing story of the military build up to World War II and how free enterprise made it happen, led by industry giants such as William Knudsen (president of General Motors) and Henry Kaiser (primary builder of the Hoover Dam).

The book tells the real story of how America won WWII through industrial might. By the end of the war, the US out produced every other nation combined! Just one US company produced more than entire Axis nations.

It’s an amazing story and well told. I highly recommend it as a 2015 must read.
